So: here’s the skinny on making the sculptures.
The smaller you go, the finer your tolerances. Into that you have to factor both wind and evaporation. It will “Bloom” when it gets dry and “wilt” when the humidity gets high. Sometimes that, or wind, results in its demise.
How you shape the joints is critical. I’m talking thousands of an inch here. It has to hang correctly and also, “Fly” in whatever wind it was built in.
I build them outside because I think that that energy translates into the work.
This thing is long and deep and wide and that’s why I am doing it.

Rubbed wax onto the moving parts of the Dancing Tree to control evaporation which will cause them to “die”. It’s an experiment to see if I can make stable sculptures that will actually sell and last.

Lovely afternoon at the Gallery

Spent the afternoon at the gallery tuning up the sculpture which is going out of balance as it dries out and laying out a small version of the Travelogue exhibit that I hope to do in the future. Only problem is that I have enough material to cover this pedestal twice over with 4×6 pics of the last 18 months.
I worked on my stuff and the gallery owner worked on hers and we would chat from time to time.
It feels really good to be treated like an artist.
One of the most enjoyable afternoons I have spent in 6 months.

Big thanks to the gallery folks for making me feel right at home. They put the Lightning Struck Dancing Tree on a pedestal and decorated it with stones and driftwood. I got to explain my work to the folks there and sold a print which I was not expecting to do. They want to carry my work and have asked for a bigger sculpture. I can do that.

Setting up for the next leg of Sites Pacific 2014

I landed in “one” of my hometowns, Seal Rock, OR. Got a job at a green furniture shop and am putting down roots.
First order of business is getting The Sculptural Assault Vehicle an upgrade which includes an electrical system to run an A/V editing system.
